12 inch or 15 inch speakers: what should you choose for your event
July 1, 2026 - ProAudio Brasov
One of the most common questions is whether to choose a 12 inch or a 15 inch speaker. The correct answer depends on the role of the speaker: top cabinet, full-range cabinet, monitor or part of a system with subwoofers.
When a 12 inch speaker makes sense
A 12 inch driver is usually faster in the midrange and easier to integrate with the high-frequency driver. It is a good choice for speech, live sound, top cabinets above subwoofers and mobile systems where weight matters.
When to choose 15 inch
A 15 inch driver can usually extend lower and provide more body in the upper bass area. It is useful for full-range use, events without a dedicated subwoofer or systems that need a fuller sound from the main speakers.
With a subwoofer, the top does not need to do everything
If the system includes subwoofers, the top cabinets should not be forced to reproduce deep bass. In this case, a well-chosen 12 inch top can sound clearer and more controlled than a 15 inch cabinet used incorrectly.
Practical recommendation
Choose 12 inch for clarity and mobility. Choose 15 inch for more low-frequency extension, especially when there is no subwoofer. For serious events, combine properly sized tops with dedicated subwoofers.
